I’ve heard so much about Donut Factory, some not so nice ones, and some really over-the-top-die-die-must-try ones but I’ve never had the luxury of eating one of those.
After having tried Dunkin’ Donuts (from JB, thanks Mr Chua) and Krispy Kremes (from HK, thanks charlene and auntie margaret), I’m convinced the best donuts amongst the 3 are the ones from Donut Factory.
In terms of texture, Dunkin’ Donuts’ were quite a mouthful requiring some effort in chewing the dense dough. Krispy Kreme’s were slightly less dense but Donut Factory’s were even softer — so soft they were sagging in between my fingers, but that’s a good thing when it’s in the mouth — effortless gastronomic pleasures.
As for sweetness, both Dunkin’ Donuts’ and Krispy Kreme’s were really sweet. So sweet that I got headaches after eating them. You know that kind of headache when you get a sugar overdose? Yes that kind. For Donut Factory, it was pleasantly balanced. Not too sweet, yet flavourful enough to avoid being bland.
So finally, the verdict after months of fad or fact — Donut Factory rocks.
P.S. Thanks Yi Ma for the donuts. She queued for about 45 minutes, bought 3 dozens for my cousins and I, only to get labelled ’siao’ and zero appreciation. Alas.
P.P.S. Even though Donut Factory rocks, I don’t think I’ll be queuing for them anytime soon. Maybe they should keep their recipe, expand their chain and make them donuts more accessible. Unfortunately, they might be discouraged to do so because of the proliferation of wannabe donut boutiques that it almost feels like a repeat of the bubble tea, err, bubble.

Sitting around talking with my mom about donuts, and I said the BEST choc. cream (or creme) donuts of all time were made by Margaret’s Donuts of Toronto, Canada! They also made the BEST honey buns, … not like that crap that Annette’s Donuts of Toronto sells!!!
Maragrets also made, what we used to call ‘horse balls’, which were white (or slightly yellow) cake donuts that had a swirl from bottom to top (similar to a crueller swirl) and they were covered in a choc. icing!! Of course, they also had plain and glazed cake donuts, as well as lemon and jelly filled powdered yeast donuts, butter tarts, lemon tarts, and cherry tarts, cookies and other sweets.
A lot of people didn’t know this, and I ws one until a friend of mine who worked at Margarets told me, that Margaret’s make a number of items for other companies, i.e. the shells for choc. eclairs!!
Margaret’s used to supply all the high schools in the GTA (if not further!) as well as the catering trucks!! At one time, Margaret’s were working 24/7 and shipping boxcars full of their product down to the east coast!
Where are they now? Well, my friend told me that the union asked the Evans brothers (who owned Margaret’s) for an increase in wages, but the bros. were going to ask the union to take a slight reduction in pay, due to hard times, but the union said NO!, and if there members didn’t get a raise, the members would strike!! The bros. said if the members went on strike, the bros. would shut the place down! The union screwed themselves BIG TIME!!!
Margaret’s were the best donuts around, as far as I’m concerned.
Krispy Kreme are a close second, probably tied with Tim Horton’s (but these are my opinions!).
By the way, if you have a complaint about Country Style donuts, and go to the trouble of mailing back the stale, smokey-tasting apple fritter, with a letter telling them what you think of their product, … they don’t even have the guts to send you a reply!!!
Enjoy your donuts, … whose ever you like!!
